This means that when European visitors go to your gallery, the photos are loaded direct from our European servers, rather than going all the way to America to fetch the file, resulting in a considerable speed improvement. Please note this feature is only active for Lite or Pro accounts, and may take a few days to take effect after the initial upgrade.

Now, as well as being stored on our own servers, photos are also backed-up to Amazon's servers (using the S3 service). This means DPHOTO now stores each and every photo in 3 different locations - an exceptional level of safety for your digital memories.

Share Albums Via Email

A great new way to share your photos. Once you've added photos to an album, you can easily send your family and friends a link to the album from Director. DPHOTO will include a photo index, so they can preview the album from their inbox. Using the Share Albums feature also allows you to share your hidden albums - perfect for when you want to share with certain people, but don't want the album visible in your public Gallery.

Problems Uploading from Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

If you have recently upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) you may have noticed a rather serious bug - uploading from Flash does not work. Thankfully, Adobe have fixed this problem in the latest version of the Flash Player (version 9,0,115,0). Download and install the updated Flash Player here.

Problems Uploading From Apple iPhoto '08

If you are using Apple iPhoto '08 to manage photos on your Mac, but are not using OS X 10.5, then you will have noticed that accessing your photos from other applications is very difficult, sometimes impossible. Apple have locked the Photo Library which iPhoto stores images in, apparently for 'simplicity'. For DPHOTO users, this effectively means that you can't upload your photos. If you upgrade to OS X 10.5 then the problem is fixed, but if you aren't ready to upgrade then you'll need to use a little workaround. This workaround is nicely illustrated on the Silver Mac blog. Follow these instructions and you will once again be able to access your Photo Library and share photos on DPHOTO.

New Privacy Features

For those of you who like to keep a low profile, we now have a 'Private Account' option under your account settings. Turning this on will remove you from all public aspects of the site, such as the Find Users search and the public RSS feeds. This means people will only be able to access your Gallery if they know your address (e.g. http://you.dphoto.com). If you're concerned that people will somehow stumble upon your Gallery, you can always add password protection to it under Gallery Settings.

Finding People Gets Easier

The Find Users search received a make over today. The search engine has been improved to handle a variety of different input options, and now also sorts results by relevance. This makes the different search types (that were previously available) redundant, so you now you only have a single search box to worry about!

Download Whole Albums At Once

You can now download a whole album with a single click! This feature has been available in Director for a while, but we've just added it the Gallery, making it much quicker and easier to distribute photos to all your family and friends. Clicking on the Download Album button will start downloading a .zip file containing all photos in the album. (Note: this feature is only available to paying users)

Updates

Data handling in Director was brought in line with the Gallery today, so that minimal data is loaded at startup, and photo data is pulled down as needed. This means much faster startup times, but a slight delay when an album is viewed for the first time.

Performance when scrolling through a very large album in Director has also been optimised. And a very, very large album or search will no longer cause Flash to crash.

Hidden Photos

This was a much requested feature, particularily from Pato. I’ve added the ability to hide individual photos, so you no longer need to move them to a hidden album or delete them in order to hide them from the public. To hide a photo, select it and set Visibility to ‘Hidden’ in the Photo Properties panel. The photo will no longer be visible or accessible from your Gallery. You can also hide or show multiple photos at once.
